The city of Kuching is located next to Sarawak river which splits the town in two halves and has been in history the most important dock in Sarawak state for boats inbound from India and China. It’s not far from the sea but at the same found itself to be well protected being sheltered between rivers. Kuching was occupied by the British family of the Brooke – Charles Brooke obtained the title of Rajah, king, for helping fighting invading tribes. Sarawak has been under the Brooke rule for over a century, after being part of the British colonies for a short period before Malaysia’s independence from the United Kingdom. The colonial heritage is still very visible in Kuching and the city hosts the large majority of historical buildings in Borneo.
This itinerary includes on the first day a visit in Kuching town with a guided tour that will let you discover the history of Kuching through its buildings, museums temples, food and all that makes Kuching such an unique place in Borneo. The city tour is entirely done by walking (Kuching is flat and not a big city), so you can get a very authentic experience of the town as if you were in Brooke’s time. The tour of Kuching is conducted by a local individual that will share many anecdotes and facts with you along the way.
On day two the experience continues with another tour outside of Kuching, towards Bako National Park. You will go from culture and history to a full immersion into nature. The path to Bako is covered by tropical rainforest, mangroves and rivers. Eventually you might get lucky to see some proboscis monkeys, silver leaves, lizards, wild boars, spectacular insects and more fauna. Once reached Bako, you can choose different trails according to your level of fitness and preference. Alongside the coastal area of the park there are some beaches and bays to stop by and relax if you want.
The excursion in Kuching town is private (you and your group only), but since Bako is a protected area, the daily trips there are organised in groups locally and tours are lead by a nature guide “on a collective basis”. City tour and trip Bako depart from your hotel. The itinerary to reach Bako requires you to take some small boats across rivers. Therefore we recommend you have adequate footwear and outfit, a light waterproof backpack (leave excess baggage at your hotel), mosquito/insects repellent, a hat for the sun and a raincoat for any rain (a disposable one will do). Bring also a towel and a canteen to have water with you.
This itinerary includes accommodation and transfers from airport to Kuching town and back (if requested). On the last day you have the option to continue to another destination from Kuching or leave to airport (transfer included).
