Malaysia, and especially Borneo, are World famous for hosting a large diversity of flora and fauna. This travel idea is an opportunity for you to get to know some of its endemic species while visiting Sabah.
You will stay one night in the “Turtle Islands”, a national park created to protect and preserve local species of marine turtles. The park consists of a group of three islands: Selingan, Bakkungan Kechil and Gulisaa. Selingan can host visitors. From here you may see the turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs on sandy beaches during the nesting season on night time and catching a sight of some black or hawksbill turtle on the day. Follow the instructions given by the local guides from the Marine Park and spend a night in the only island’s structure – a simple accommodation consisting in a few small chalets.
The following day, reaching Sandakan, you will visit the two main centers for the safeguard of the wildlife (amongst them, the orangutan ape and the Malaysian bear known as “Sun bear”). You will also visit the largest botanical garden in the Sepilok Forest, the Rainforest Discovery Center.
The offer includes transportation and accommodation in full board for a total of two-days and one-night at Selingaan Island. The tour departs from Sandakan (airport or hotel if you are already in town) – the driver will get you from there to Sim Sim village jetty, where speedboats leave to Selingan. At the end of your tour, the driver can send you back from Sepilok to Sandakan, airport or hotel, or toward other destinations you may have booked.
Since the areas covered by this trip are all protected, the visits are conducted by local park rangers and guides and you need to follow their instructions. Taking pictures or videos of the turtles is forbidden on both day and night time, as well as moving around the island by yourself from 6 pm (h 18:00) till 6 am. While on the island, we suggest to bring only a small baggage with you – the ride to the island is on a small-sized boat. If you have a bigger luggage you can leave it at the baggage room at the Sim Sim village’s pier before embarking to Selingan island, or at your accommodation in Sandakan. We warmly recommend to book this tour far in advance due to the limited number of accommodations in Selingan.
