Sepilok is a district located at 25 km – 45 minutes drive – from Sandakan, East Malaysia. The area is most famous for hosting the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre .The centre opened in 1964 as the first official orangutan rehabilitation project for rescued orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunting or kept as pets. The orphaned orangutans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as they are ready. The sanctuary is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, consisting of virgin rainforest. Today around 60 to 80 orangutans are living free in the reserve.
With this trip idea, you can stay in Sepilok rainforest spending one night at the local Forest Edge Resort, an eco-friendly lodge in the middle of the forest. Included in the offer there’s a vehicle to drive you there from Sandakan (hotel or airport) and visits in company of local nature guides to the orangutan centre, as well as to the Bornean Sunbear Conservation centre which is nearby – similarly with its orangutan counterpart, the Sunbear centre hosts orphaned sunbears – a species of bears endemic of Borneo.
At the end of your stay on the second day at the Forest Edge Resort, the driver will take you back to the airport in Sandakan, or to your hotel in town, or alternatively yet to the Sim Sim village jetty if you intend to embark for another destination from there (for example the turtle islands or the Kinabatangan).
